Your baby’s skin is five times thinner than an adult’s so it is clearly important to make sure you choose natural products that benefit your child’s skin. If you need guidance on how to buy the best organic skin care products for your baby, Erika from Organic Baby Resource gives some key pointers on what to choose.

The first and most important recommendation is to buy organic skin care products. This means the creams and moisturisers you use will have no traces of pesticides or synthetic chemicals that could potentially harm your baby’s delicate skin.

To find out if a skin care product is organic look for an organic accreditation symbol or logo on the packaging. Erika gives examples of both American and Australian certifying organisations. She suggests you familiarise yourself with the symbols for organic accreditation from other countries. We now live in a global consumer market so products from other countries are likely to be available wherever you live.

The second recommendation is to check the ingredients list carefully. Food based ingredients are safe and effective choices for a baby skin care product. Suggested ingredients include olive oil, coconut oil, sesame oil or shea butter. A good rule is to make sure you recognise or at least have heard of the ingredients listed. Avoid products with synthetic chemical ingredients like parabens or phtalates. If the product is certified organic it is highly unlikely you will find these synthetic ingredients.

Erika also suggests spot testing each product. Just because a product is organic does not mean your baby can’t have an allergic reaction to it. Any itching or redness may indicate an allergic reaction to one or more of the ingredients. If this happens make a note of the ingredients and don’t use the product, find an alternative. There is a growing range of organic baby skin care products on the market so there’s sure to be something that suits your child. And it’s worth the effort because after all, you have to live along time in your skin.
