In the first part of this shocking presentation given in 2006, Ken Cook, Head of the US Environmental Working Group (EWG), reveals the extent to which toxic chemicals find their way into our bodies.

The EWG funded the research which was based on taking one sample of blood from 10 Americans throughout the country. The results are quite simply jawdropping. Out of 413 toxic chemicals tested, over 287 chemicals were found in the samples, with approximately 200 chemicals identified per individual.

Mr Cook asks the question: ‘how were these people exposed to so many toxins?’. The people tested had not been directly exposed to air or water pollution, nor skin care products or household cleaners, neither were they farm or factory workers. The answer is truly terrifying.

What is equally disturbing is that some of the toxic chemicals found in the blood of these 10 Americans were actually banned over 30 years ago. When referenced with EWG’s toxicity databases it turned out that:

  • 134 chemicals found are associated with cancer;
  • 151 associated with birth defects;
  • 154 linked to hormone disruption;
  • 186 were potentially linked to infertility;
  • 130 could cause immune system disruption;
  • 158 were likely neuro-toxins, including heavy metals such as lead and mercury.

For anyone interested in understanding why organic living is so vitally important to our health, and the health of our children, our environment and our planet, this amazing presentation reveals the extent of the toxicity that is part of our daily lives.

Although we can not rid ourselves, or the environment, of all the pollutants and toxins already out there, choosing an organic lifestyle is a first step in redressing the balance.
