Did you really think that organic clothing was stuck in hippy retro mode? Meet a couple of designers who are blazing the trail for eco-friendly and organic clothing and address three areas of concern, the health of the planet, the consumer and the health of the people who make the clothes.

Sandy Skinner, founder of EcoSkin, shares her vision: “I wanted to make a difference and come up with a line that was fashion forward and sexy, yet still gives women the option to dress ‘green’ and look phenomenal.”

Eco-friendly fabrics, including organic cotton and hemp, are an essential aspect of the concept. Fabrics used have been grown without the use of pesticides, and dyes and bleaches containing toxic ingredients.

‘M’, fashion designer, blends organic cotton with soybean, charcoal and bamboo in his collection, and tries to use pure vegetable dyes rather than synthetic dyes. “Part of the reason I integrate eco into my fashion is because I want to let people know the next time you buy a pair of jeans or a T-shirt, all it it takes is that little second of thought and you can greatly impact the world in a positive way.”

As part of their commitment to improving the health of the world and its inhabitants, both designers support events like the ‘Think Vitality Fashion Show’ which benefits Woman’s Cancer Research Institute at the well known Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. The hospital is undertaking a double blind study on the correlation between food and the immune systems. Lizanne Falsetto, founder of Think Products, sponsors of the Fashion Show, hopes that this study will result in factual information that proves the products you eat, wear and use around yourself is crucial to intrinsic health and longevity.

The message from this fashion show is that what you wear is part of a healthy lifestyle, that is both glamorous and green.
