Is Organic Baby Food Really Better for Your Baby? Melissa Kidd from the Soil Association answers the question with three clear benefits of feeding your baby with organic food.

Firstly, it’s important to know that babies don’t develop a blood-brain barrier until they are around six months old. This means that a baby’s brain has no protection whatsoever from any toxins that might be carried around in the blood. Given that pesticides were developed to kill things and some pesticides were developed as nerve poisons, any pesticide residues contained in the food will be absorbed directly a baby’s brain. Organic farms don’t use synthetic pesticides so immediately the risk and exposure to such toxins is reduced.

Secondly, it is becoming increasingly accepted that organic food generally contains higher levels of vitamins and minerals than conventionally farmed produce. Clearly, babies (and children) need as many vitamins and minerals as possible to help their growth and development.

It should be noted that while pregnant or breastfeeding, mothers should be eating as much organic food as possible, as whatever mum eats is passed directly onto the baby.

Thirdly, a child’s immune systems are still developing until they are around eight years old. This means that babies and young children don’t have the capacity to break down toxins or to metabolize them as easily as adults do. Consequently they are far more vulnerable, and need the most nutritious and safest food available. Organic food potentially offers the best nutrition and is free from harmful synthetics.
